Mission Statement/Information
The National Honor Society chapter of Wall High School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization.
Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in four areas of evaluation: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Standards for selection are established by the national office of NHS and have been revised to meet our local chapter's needs. Students are selected to be members by a five-member Faculty Council, appointed by the principal, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school each fall. The chapter advisor serves as a non-voting member of the Faculty Council and is only present to assure selection procedures are accurately followed.
For the scholarship criterion, seniors and juniors who have maintained a cumulative weighted GPA of 3.6000 or higher from the ninth grade to the last semester of their previous year shall be eligible candidates. The academic threshold is 3.6000 exactly (e.g. a weighted GPA of 3.5999 would fail to meet this threshold.) Those students who meet this criterion are invited to complete a Candidate Information Binder that provides the Faculty Council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service. A history of leadership experience and participation in school and community service is also required.
To evaluate a candidate’s character, the Faculty Council uses two forms of input. First, school disciplinary records are reviewed. Second, members of the faculty are solicited for input regarding their professional reflections on a candidate’s character.
These forms and the Student Information Binder are carefully reviewed by the Faculty Council to determine membership. A majority vote of the Council is necessary for selection. Candidates are notified regarding selection or non-selection according to a predetermined schedule.
Following notification, a formal induction ceremony is held at the school to recognize all the newly selected members. Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all four criteria that led to their selection. This obligation includes regular attendance at chapter meetings held monthly during the school year, participation in one of the chapter service projects, and one of the chapter fundraising projects. In addition, at the end of each month, students are required to submit evidence of the completion of six hours of service activities.
Students or parents who have questions regarding the selection process or membership obligations can contact the chapter advisors, Mrs. Amanda Glynn ([email protected]) or Mrs. Samantha Santiago ([email protected])
Club Goals/Objectives
The purpose of this chapter shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to perform volunteer service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in students of Wall Township High School.
Freshmen and Sophomores: What Can You Do Now for Service?
- 40 hours of out-of-school service per year (includes summer after school year)
- This can be done in many different ways, such as going to NHS volunteer events, or doing service through other clubs and organizations.
- Hours need to be dated and contact information needs to be provided so we can confirm those hours.
- Be a member of at least 2 clubs per year
- Wall High School provides SO many opportunities to get involved-- there is a club that fits everyone.
